Catal

Luis and I spent two days at Disneyland recently to celebrate my birthday. Luis’ greencard came in the mail the day before. What was the first thing he did with his new greencard? Use it as identification to get a Southern California Resident Disneyland Passport. I couldn’t be prouder.

I made dinner reservations for us at Catal, one of the nicer restaurants in Downtown Disney (the best thing about Disneyland is D.D. You can leave the park, have a proper meal and drinks, then go right back in!) As it turns out, Patina Group owns several of the DD restaurants: Catal, Uva Bar, Tortilla Jo’s, Naples Pizzeria and Napolini.

Here’s what you do: go to the Patina Group website and sign up for their birthday reward. They will e mail you a $30 coupon you may use up to 90 days after your birthday. Coupon in hand, we went upstairs to a nice, quiet, soothing dining room of Catal (short for Catalonia). Sneaking off to a quiet area is really a treat after a days of rides, crowds and sensory overload of the parks.

We started with some apps: a raviolo with a quail egg and brown butter, and some arancini. Both were really good. Luis was afraid the portions would be small and he would leave the restaurant hungry, so when it came time for his entree, he ordered a 16 oz. prime rib. He didn’t finish it.

I got their signature dish, paella. It was excellent, just second best to our wedding paella. Enough for two, next time I will go back and just share this dish.
