Earl’s Gourmet Grub is a new sandwich cafe in the DMV (Downtown Mar Vista). I have never been there for their regular menu (shame on me), but I have been hearing through the grapevine that they have been hosting special dinners and events. Last week we went to their Oktober Fiesta. Out back behind the shop they have this great back patio area, with hanging lights and even little electrical posts with lights in the glass insulators.
As you can tell by the name, this Oktoberfest wasn’t quite the traditional. They had chips and salsa to start, then two giant sausages (one chorizo, one beef) with mole sauce, jalapeño saurkraut, black beans and rice, and Mexican beer on tap.
A funny menu, lots of food and terrific atmosphere created by the hip, low-key local crowd (My friend insists Mar Vista is the new Brooklyn). The only slight drawback was that the “tickets” needed to be purchased in advance online ( a bargain at $12.75), then you had to go next door to The Grind to purchase tickets for beer ($3), back outside to get the beer, back inside to get the food, back outside to eat, back inside for another beer ticket….etc. We were momentarily confused, but it soon subsided. Check their website for other events.
